Joan Baez is a notorious flake and attention whore...Garcia must have exhibited great patience to suffer the Dead's mercifully brief crossing of paths with this magpie...as for this song, it sucks big time, pure dreck, it doesn't sound complimentary...worst thing, playing backup to a song with your bands name in the lyrics is about as lame as it gets, shame on her and Mickey...Tons of Steel is like a convergence of the genius of Ripple and Across the Universe blended together compared to this road apple...

Then I guess you're not a fan of "Children of the 80s" either. (Children of the '80s: Better or worse than I Want To Live in America?)

But really, how is she a "notorious flake and attention whore"? She has a beautiful voice (not exactly displayed well with the GD, but it is) and her music can be really moving. Granted, someone in the blog makes a good point about how it all sounds the same, whether she's singing about nuclear war or a dog. Still, I like it. So there :-)

I'm just astounded they were actually recording backup for an album. I wonder how far that went, how many sessions, etc.

edit -- Well, I'm listening to 12/12/81, and re Lucifer's Eyes, she introduces it by saying "Mickey doesn't like this part. It's about homosexuality in high school." Really?!? Well, at least someone told her there was something about it not to like ... I must say her singing is way better in the small setting than it is on 12/31, when she seems completely knocked off-kilter by all the NYE energy.

the Dead and Baez were not meant to coexist on the same stage, sounds better on paper...never cared much for politics mixing with music, yes music has been a vehicle for social statements, but Baez seemed to be basically warbling through Dylan songs and lecturing for most of her career...she has her place and is the archetype 60s female folk singer, just not my style...however, I am shocked that Children of the 80s was never a smash hit...

There are 2 parts of my feelings about Joan .
1: Her singing . Fine to great . Especially on the folk material, and some of her Dylan, though, get this, I sort of like goofy Nana Mouskouri better in the same material (!). some of it clearly base on Baez's versions . Compare .

Boy, was that was a digression !
2. Her trying to stay relevant, and sometimes coming off as an unwelcome guest . sort of the way Ginsberg would show up on a Clash album . And "Children of the 80's" what a lame attempt to hitch on to the Grateful Dead thing . With the most cringe worthy lyrics ever . And the preachy politics ! Dylan, who has been, to be honest a real shit to her, but she just didn't get it when he left "protest songs" behind him . The Baez/Dead thing was an odd chapter indeed !

Tons of Steel is a great tune, with or without comparison to Baez' dreck.
